An introduction to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in the church.

The best conversations happen around the table. As we share a meal, we seem to share a piece of ourselves ― our experiences, our concerns, our beliefs, our hope. At the table, we pass down the history and legacy of those who have come before us.

And as we listen – truly listen – we begin to understand each other in powerful new ways. When we have a seat at the table, we have a window into a world beyond our own.

A Seat at the Table will help your church start vital conversations to build unity through diversity. It is an opportunity to bring together people from your congregation and your community and share the benefits of striving to be a church that includes persons of every color, culture and category from your community.

After this gathering, your church will be ready to take its next step on its journey toward greater biblical diversity.

How it works

What is it?

A Seat at the Table is an introduction to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in the church. During the 90-minute gathering, participants will share a meal, learn what it means to be biblically diverse in the church and the community and participate in a question-and-answer session with representatives from Converge’s Office of Biblical Diversity.

What is the format?

The 90-minute presentation can be facilitated as a breakfast or a luncheon and includes: 30 minutes for the meal, 30 minutes for the presentation and 30 minutes for questions and answers

Who should we invite?

We strongly recommend you invite a diverse group to the table. This group could include people of varying ages, races, genders, physical abilities/disabilities, etc. The participants do not have to be limited to members of your church. You can invite non-church members as guests.

Who will facilitate the gathering?

Representatives from Converge’s Office of Biblical Diversity will travel to your church and lead the presentation and question-and-answer session.

What does my church need to provide as a host?

Your church will be asked to provide a venue for the gathering and the meal.

What happens after the gathering?

That’s up to you. We would welcome an opportunity to return to your church to facilitate Foundations of Biblical Diversity. This one-day workshop is more participative and goes into greater detail than A Seat at the Table.

Unity in diversity

Converge is a movement of churches working to help people meet, know and follow Jesus. We do this by starting and strengthening churches together worldwide. This includes reaching people of all colors, cultures and classes with the gospel of Jesus Christ and making him known throughout the world.

To accomplish this, Converge's Office of Biblical Diversity works alongside its U.S. regions to encourage, empower and equip your church to champion biblical diversity in your community.
